THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE. ARITHMETICAL PROBLEMS. (Received April 28, 10 a.m.) LONDON, April 27. At the Imperial Education Conference, Mr Jackman, ex-president of the National Union of Teachers, advocated the discontinuance of the teaching of arithmetic to children between nine and ten years of age. Problems taking months to teach at that age could be taught in three weeks when the children are between eleven and twelve. .The time saved could be devoted to reading. Mr Andrews (Western Australia) said Mr Jackman's' system was used in Western Australia, and he was anxious to know why it had not been generally adopted fti England. Dr. Strong. Rector of Montrose 'Academy, said he was doubtful regarding the desirability of co-educa-tion in secondary schools. In Scotland the birls matured more rapidly, over-weighting the boys from twelve to fifteen years of age. The education in New South Wales had adopted many features of the Scotch system, but did not intend to make High Schools co-educational establishments.
