HEALTH IN THE BOROUGH.
[To The Editor.'] Sir, — As there is a fair amount of sickness about Masterton, including epidemics of measles, diphtheria, and some cases of typhoid fever in the Masterton Hospital, I would like to call public attention to the necessity of keeping the different premises cleaned up, such as fowl-houses, stables, and yards where garbage, etc., accumulates. Prevention is better than cure a. any time, and citizens sl'ould recognise this. Just recently a case of glaring neglect in this respect was brought under my notice, where a person whose premises are not far from Queen Street, had not had the fowl-house cleaned out for years, and the droppings were nearly up to the perches, while the yard . as well was in a filthy condition with horse manure and rubbish. It can scarcely be wondered why an epidemic gets a hold when people are so short-sighted, as to allow this state of things. While we have an excellent Inspector in Mr Cairns, who is energetic and courteous, it cannot be expected that he can he everywhere at once, but people should use their own discretion, and when a drain becomes blocked, or any other nuisance occurs, the matter should be reported at once, as sentiment should be put aside when the health of the community is at stake through gross carelessness.— 1 am, etc., FRESH AIR.
