ALLEGED CONTEMPT OF COURT.
MR HUGHES' EPLANATION
(Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) MELBOURNE, April 22.
Mr W. M. Hughes, Acting-Prime Minister, states that the facts concerning the Coal Vend's existence and operations cannot be suppressed merely because there happens to be a prosecution.
Ho says that he is not aware that lie has said anything of which evidence has not already been given before the Court. He will, however, abstain from saying anything that the Court may regard as unfair to the defendants.
He had been asked to conduct a campaign, and he must allude to this monopoly, and give as an instance of its operations that which was already in evidence before the Court.
