THE MAIN TRUNK.

Th probability of a permanent duplication of the express tram service on the North Island Main Trunk line appears to be extermely remote. Mr T. Ronayne, general manager of the New Zealand railways, told a New Zealand Herald reporter that there was at present no justification for such an increase in the expenditure as was involved in the proposal. At the present time, the express trains which, were run .between Auckland and Wellington provided ample accommodation for that section of the public travelling between the two cities, although the passengers carried on each of the trains included many making only short journeys who should travel by the local trains. If only long-distanoe passengers were carried by the through expresses the adequacy of the existing accommodation would be even more apparent.
