TWADDLE.
A simple remark made' by Mr .James McGregor, at Palmerston North, about the larger tradesmen of this town sending delivery wagons into the country and thus affecting the business of the smaller tradesmen, has been made the peg upon which to hang quite a lot of nonsensical twaddle. The Evening Post has interviewed: several big merchants upon the subject, and they all repudiate the suggestion that they send out delivery carts. Naturally they do. Mr McGregor did not intend to convey the ittipression that the Wellington merchants sent out carts. He was, of course, referring to the larger houses in Masterton. One soft goods man of the city— he must be very "soft"— makes the statement that Masterton is suffering because certain men coming in from the country go to licensed towns to "knock ■down" their cheques. There may be an element of' truth in this statement, but the effect of this ("man from the oountry" bogey is being grossly exaggerated,, as is also the condition of'trade in Masterton generally. This town is getting along very nicely, and it will live through all the humbug and nonsense which is being uttered by designing croakers and misguided -pressmen. |The depression which existed in the toWn, in common with that of Wellington, Palmerston and elsewhere, is gradually passing away, and 1 it is gratifying to be able to state that for years past there has not ibeen a more confident tone in the town than there is at present.
