MR PURCELL WEBB'S ORGAN RECITAL.
IN KNOX CHURCH
It was unfortunate for those who wished to attend the organ recital at Knox Church last night that the weather was so wet. Knox Church possesos a fine organ and an organist of repute, and, given a fine night, there would have been a much larger attendance. Mr Purcell.Webb opened an excellent programme ,• with Botiste's , "Processional March," which was plaved with vim. A "Meditation" by E. d'Evry followed. This gave the organist opportunity of displaying the lighter-toned stops of the organ, which he fully availed himself of. An exceptionally fine composition by Grison followed, viz., "Marche Triomphale." The organist made, the most of his instrument and piece, and the solo was one of the most acceptable items on the programme. Two transcriptions of Mendelssohn's soups without words, ■ "A Gondola Song," and No, 46 followed, and the latter was played with spirit. In place of Morandi's "Allegro Vivace," Mr Webb substituted the same composer's "Rondo de Campanelli," which waralso rendered with spirit. One of Neviu's dainty compositions—"Narcissus," was very enjoyable. The programme \ concluded with Batisk's Grand Oppertone (No. 3). It would be difficult to name the best selection in last night's programme. The programme consisted of a variety of gems, and it did not matter what kind of composition was performed, Mr Webb was quite at home, and 1 he rendered his solos, without exception, with brilliancy, finish and exquisite taste.
The vocalists were Miss Jessie McGregor and Miss Ida Feist. Miss McGregor was in exceptionally good form. She sang two solos from Handel's "Messiah"—"He Shall Feed His Flock," and "He Was Despised." She had her voice well under, control, and gave musicianly renderings of her soloS. Miss Ida Feist has a sweet and clear soprano voice, and though she suffered from a slight cold and nervousness she acquitted herself creditably in her rendering of Gounod's "The King of Love." The Rev. Mr Thompson announced that the recital would be repeated at an early date.
