Sears, the captain of the Iroquois. which was wrecked near Victoria (8.C.), last week, 18 lives being lost, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. Evidence at the inquest showed that the captain did not take precautions for the passengers' safety. jThe Sydney Morning Herald says that Lady Medallist ran a great race, and the owner is to be complimented on sending across the mare to tackle such formidable opponents as Comedy King and Trafalgar. The steamer Mooltan was quarantined on her arrival at Adelaide. She has a case of small-pox aboard, the victim being a Kecond-class Australian passenger, who joined the ship at India. '■ There was further rain in Sydney on Sunday night, and it is still threatening and showery. The heavy falls have broken the dry spells in the coastal districts. The debate on the Reciprocity Treaty has commenced' in the U.S.A. Senate. The Democrats are s-trougly supporting the measure, urging that it is merely the first .stop towards the revision of the tariffs, to which the party is already pledged.
