N.Z. SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

WON BY FOGWELL

(By Telegraph— Association.; AKAROA, Last 'Night. The second contest for the professional sculling championship of New Zealand ensued to-day, on the Akaroa Harbour, W. Fogwell (Australia) the challenger, beating the holder (G. Whelch), of Akaroa, by two lengths, after securing the lead at the end of the first mile. The course was in the Akaroa Harbour, and was 3| miles long. As a result, of the race, Fogwell secures a purse of £2OO, besides the title. Whelch secures the. gate, which, however, was not very large. A sou'-wester wai' Mowing, and rain fell during part of the race.

Both men got away together, but Whelch, rowing the better of the two, soon secured a lead, and at theend of the first mile was three-quar-ters of a length to the good. Prom here Fogwell drew away, leading once by five lengths, and despite heroic sprints by Whelch, he never looked in danger of being headed, winning by two- lengths. The "official time was 21min. lsec. Interviewed after the content. Whelch said he had rowed his last race. Fogwell is to row the winner on Saturday c.f the Pearce-Kemp contest, for the championship of Australia.
