WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB.

OPENING DAY, The aut'iiran meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club was opened on the pretty Tauherenikau Course on Saturday last, under conditions which, though not encouraging to the Stewards, were by no means depressing. A soaking rain set in at an early hour in the morning, and intermittent showers fell during the day. This, no doubt, deterred many from being present. The breaking of the drought, however, was welcomed "by farmers, and even horse-owners did not. regret the change, for it had a softening effect upon the course and made the going much better than would otherwisehave been the case. Taking all things into consideration, the attendance of the public was very satisfactory. The whole of the arrangements were perfect, and an excellent day's sport resulted. The Wellington Proiessiona! Orchestra rendered a select programme of music during the day, and this enlivened the proceedings considerably. The totalisator investments were spirited, a sum of £7252 being put through the machine, which is about £2OOO in excess of the amount registered for the same day last year. The racing, on tho whole, was very good, though there was not what might be termed an exciting finish throughout the day. The fields wer? all good, and in several of the events there was not a single scratching, which is a decided compliment to the handicapper. Mr R. Skipwith acted as starter, and succeeded in getting his fields away well together. The win of Gunboat in the Easter Handicap Mas exceedingly popular. The hottest favourite of the day was Sea Queen, which won the Wardell Handicap in fine style. The resuls were as follow:
