PROSPERITY OF FARMERS.

The audacity of some of the Government apologists is amazing. One of the leading journals circulating in Sir Joseph Ward's electorate has the assurance to attribute the prosperity of the farmers to "a Government which has ever had the interests of the farming community at heart.'' The present Government has the interest of the farmer so much at heart that it would, if possible, tax him off his land. It has already done everything in its power to make rural 'if > unbearable, with the result that- the population is drifting at an almost alarming rate into the cities. The farmer has, been led like a lamb to the slaughter. He has been exploited at every turn. And were it not i v a beneficent Providence and favoiirable markets he would be crushed out of existence. If the present Govtrnment is a friend to the farmer, the latter might with reason exclaim, "Save us from our friends!"
