Tho weather still keeps very dry, and farmers aro looking worried as feed is getting scarce, and unless rain comes soon there wilH*o an undoubted shortage of winter feed. Several good "heads" were secured last week by deer-stalkers, one 14pointer being a particularly good one. Rabbit inspectois have been very active here of late, with a result that a largo amount of poison has been laid, and the "rabbit pest ought to be considerably diminished. i Mr Boddington passed through here I on Monday last, on his way collecting j tho census papers for this district. | It is expected that a goodly num- | ber of stalwart Territorials will be recruited from this district tinder the new Defence Scheme. The many friends of Mr R. Douglas, who met with an accident on the Maungarakis last week, will he pleased to hear that he is progressing sat- | isfactorily. I Mr and Mrs McGregor, of Hikorangi, are touring the North per / medium of motor-car. . | Mr M. Lavery, of Carterton, visited this district this week. J Mr Hobbes, of Homewood, is paying | a short visit to "Brackcnfield." j Messrs Kummer and Tatham, who have been stalking in the Martin- j borough district, returned this week, ' having shot several good "heads." The first football match of the season will be played at Te Wharau on j the 22nd inst., between teams repre-1 senting Gladstone and Te Wharau, t. when a keen match should ensue.
