COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT
TO THE MASTEIITON COUNTY COUNCIL. The following report was submitted by the County Engineer (Mr D. McLachlan) to yesterday's meeting of tho Masterton County Council:— OPAKI RIDING.Matahiwi Road. —Contract No. 255: Delivering 895 cubic yards of metal for repairs This contract was let at last meeting, and has been in progress since tho beginning of last week, about 500 cubic yards of metal having been delivered. Mikinriki Koad.—Contract No. 257 (G. Gt.): Metalling 20 chains of road. —The above was reported complete by tho contractor on the Bth inst.
Waingawa to Camp, and Branch Roads.—Contract No. 252: Delivering 1000 csubic yards of metal.—Fair progress has been mado with the work, which is about half completed. Building a 27-feet span bridge over tho Black Creek. —Contract No. 249: —There lias been considerable delay in obtaining timber for this structure. Tho bulk of the timber is on the ground, and the work is in progress. The cleaning of the Pairau Swamp drains, a lentil of 60 odd chains, has been reported completed. Northern Approach—Contract No. 238: 26-jV chains of road formation, etc. —Excellent headway has been mado since last meeting with the above. The contractor has concentrated his power on the Southern end of the work where suitable material has been readily obtained.
Contract No. 237: Constructing two bridges over the Waipoua River. —■ Better progress has been made during the past month, all the piers in the waterway having been built up above ordinary watermark. Four thousand feet of ironbark has been delivered, and is a good specimen of timber. Railway Road. —Contract No. 256:
1 64 chains of formation and 19 chains [of metalling.—ln accordance with the resolution of tho Council, the Chairman has agreed with the lowest tenderer for tho construction of a 30ft width of formation, 19 chains of metalling, etc., for £l4O, the work to bo started this week.
TE WHITT RIDING.— Weraiti-Feniyhurst Road. Contract No. 246 : 178.1 chains of metalling with limestone. —Tho contractor expects to complete the delivery of tho metal on the above contract on Thursday naxt, weather permitting. I purpose strengthening the length cut up (20 chains) on either side of the saddle. The contractor offers to undertake this at tho schedule rate of his contract.
RANGITCMAII RIDING!.— Wangaehu Road. —Contract No. 253: Delivering 270 cubic yards of metal repairs. Tho tender of S. Connell was accepted for this work at last meeting, but as he has not furnished his deposit and complied with the conditions, I purpose re-letting this work. Light surface repairs are being made to the Matahiwi Road. WAINUIORU RIDING.— Brancepeth Road. —Contract No. 247 : Metalling 60 chains of road.— This contract was completed, with 36.65 chains extra, last month. West-more Road.—A small platform bridge has broken down and is beyond repair. I consulted Cr. Beetham, and as the matter was an urgent one I have ordered tho timber for a sft by 7ft culvert to replace the bridge. A temporary crossing in the vicinity of the bridge has been made to accommodate light wheel traffic. Blairlogie-East Coast Road. —Contract No. 243: Delivering 1270 cubic yards of metal. —The contract has been completed, together with 480 cubic yards extra of metal and blinding-
Ma st erton-Waimata Road.—Contract No. 241: Supplying 150 cubic yards of metal for repairs.—The contractor, who has finished tho bulk of his work, Is now engaged on a last section between Kahumingi and Taueru.
Diver's Corner to Taueru Bridge.— Contract No. 251: Delivering 780 chains of metal repairs. The above contract was started last week, and fair progress is being made. UPPER TAUERU RIDING.— Contract No. 255: Painting the Glendonakl Bridge.—The work was started immediately after last meeting and good progress has been made. Mangarai Road.—(L. and G) Contract No. 248: 41.36 chains of formation, culverts etc. The contractor has experienced difficulty in getting suitable labour, but is making good headway with the small gang at his disposal. To Oro Ore-Bideford Road.-—Con-tract No. 254: Delivering 70 cubic yards of waterworn shingle. The above contract ha.s been carried out, and an additional 20 cubic yards authorised. Metal repairs havo been effected .between mile pesi 11 and Glendonakl. Tho d<-v 'epson has afforded the carting pf a letter quality of metal from tho riverbeds and the property owners havo given .the Council every facility for access to tho best shoals in the riverbeds. ALFREDTON RIDING.— Alfredton-Wcber Road.—Contract
