MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

MEETJXG OP COaiMJITEE.

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Mastevton Borough Council was h-.->]d last evening, there being present,—His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), Crs. W. Morris, .J. Prentice, J. C. Ewington, W. Pragnell, T. G. Hoar, and J. Elliott.

Accounts amounting to £".5 - 10s 3di (general) and £304 7s 4C: (gas) were-passed for payment. TBe Eton. J. Carroll wrote stating that the Government were prepared to subsidise £1 for £1 up to £250 for works carried out by public authorities in memory of King George. The Mayor stated thr.t a further letter had been written to the Act-ing-Premier, asking -what class of work would be recognised by the Government. The Mayor added that he himself favoured taking the opportunity .of the Government's offer. The secretary of the Masterton Fire Board wrote asking that stipulations be made in granting permits for burning rubbish, providing that all fires must be extinguished before sunset. The Councillors generally favoured the suggestion of tlie Board, and it was subsequently decided to state in issuing permits that the fires must be' extinguished before sunset. The Park caretaker asked .whether in painting the seats the names should be replaced. Cr Hoar moved that the names be not painted on again. There was no seconder to Cr Hoar's motion, and Cr Ewington moved that the names be .repainted. He stated that it was an incentive to others to make donations. The motion was carried. Miss A. E. Rive asked that her contract for supplying periodicals tothe Library be terminated.— The request was granted. The Borough poundkeeper reported as follows: Animals impounded from within the Borough, horses 17, cattle 2; other than the Borough, horses 10, sheep 200; released during the month, horses 26, sheep 202; remaining in, 1 horse. » \ The Gas Manager reported that to erect a lamp at the top of Esse* Street the cost would be £5, while to instai one at the culvert at the bottom of the street the cost would be £2O. In addition to this, he recommended the removal of a lamp on the opposite side of Chapel Street to the bottom corner of Essex Street, at a. cost of £4. It was resolved to have the work icairried out, and to deduct the cost from the general account. An application was received from the Mastortoii\Firo Board for permission to erect a. building at the rear of the Central station. I). G. Br own applied for permission to alter and add to the workshop at the back of' his cycle shop. The necessary permission was granted in both instances.
