LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
Speaking at Kaiapoi recently, the Hon. D. BtkMo stated that "wherever land for settlement was available at a reasonable price, it was being acquired." What does the Minister mean by a "reasonable price?" If he means a price below the market price, he admits that the State is wanting something from the individual to which it is not entitled. It is sheer nonsense to say that the Government is acquiring the land which is available at reasonable market prices. It is doing no such There is an abundance of land offering, if the Government would only bestir itself audi pay a reasonable price. But why should people be hunting for land when the Crown already lias hundreds of thousands of acres of Native and other land available?
