A STRONG CASE.
Masterton has a strong case to place before the Minister for Public Works in regard to both the Rimutaka deviation and the Pongaroa line. The former is absolutely necessary'to cope with the increased traffic which is coming from the north, and which will be- doubled when the Napier-Gis-fxn'iie connection is made. The Minister has. announced that a commencement will very soon be made with this line from the Napier end. The work of deviating the Rimutaka should be simultaneous with that < f the Gisborne extension, so that the line will be ready for the extra traffic. So far as the Pongaroa line is cone** - ned, the Minister, after his visit to that district, will require very little convincing. It must be impressed upon him, however, that there is only ono natural terminus, and that :s iWaMtrton. An effort "is being made to sidetrack him, but he is too canny a Scotchman to be caught by even political chaff.
