CORRESPONDENCE.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH MASTERTON ■* [To The Editor.} Sir, —The following Government statement, just obtained from official sources, goes to prove* that the com- i plaint from which Masterton suffers is I not likely to prove very disastrous j either to the town or to No-License ' Returns of Savings Bank business at Masterton during the years 1908-9-10 : —I9OB : New accounts opened, 681; I No. of deposits. 6037 ; amount de- | posited, £66,733 16s 6d: No. of ac- j counts closed, 308 ; No. of withdrawals, 3159; amount withdrawn, £50,822 5s 7d. 1909: New accounts opened. 601; No. of deposits'. 5893 : amount deposited. £66,418-ITs; No. of accounts closed, 243 : No. of withdrawals, 3033 : amount withdrawn. £52.094 Os 4d. 1910: New accounts opened, 614; No. of deposits. 6355: amount deposited. £76,944 lis 6d ; No. of accounts closed, 224 ; No. of withdrawals. 2950 ; amount withdrawn. £49,025 14s 4'd. ' The difference between the amount deposited and that withdrawn shows the actual amount saved each vear. viz, 1908 £15,911; 1909. £1.4.324: 191o! £27,919. Thus Masterton sav-d £12,008 more during 1910 under NoLicense than it did during 1908 under License. The fact' that Masterton under No-License has increased its savings by over £IOOO per month goes to nrove that it is not suffering any serious complaint, and confirms the sta + "- ment made by the Cln'ef Justice. Sir Robert Stout, a* few days ago in jtl- - the Masterton jnrv, that "thabsence of crime is considered o»e of the best /"'id'"- , '- , es of the prosperity of a ry>opl« "—-Thanking you in anticipation, T am. etc., TABEZ BRIDGES. Sec. W. N.-L. Council.
