THE COUNCIL ELECTIONS.
Masterton, just*how, is in a state of municipal somnolence. Although within a week or two of the biennial elections, not the slightest move has been made ■ by the ratepayers in the direction of securing suitable candidates for municipal honours. The recent legislation has probably deterred some from offering their services, whilst others may not regard the prospects of a strenuous period with satisfaction. Whatever may be ' the cause, the fact remains that absolutely no public interest is being manifested in municipal matters. This is very much to be deplored'."The community has a right to expect that its best citizens will take some, interest in the good government of the town. There are important works to be kept in repair, finances to be adjusted, and progressive measures to be undertaken. It is unfair to expect Mr Cora dine, •or any other man, with a new staff and a body of raw .municipal recruits, to do justice to the municipality. It will be a reproach upon the ratepayers if they allow things to go by default.
