Tiie Judge has decided against the Government in the Alaskan coal cases, heard at Washington. The point regarding a foreign corporation's right to hold coal claims in Alaska awaits consideration.
The Federal Government is issuing an open invitation to the city designers the world to compete for the three thousand pounds offered in prizes for a suitable scheme for the Federal capital. Twenty models of the site will be prepared to be exhibited at convenient centres throughout - world for the benefit of competitors for the prizes.
The police enquiry in the Clapham Common murder case has now ended. The Commisisoner has now to decide whether it is necessary to examine Morrison before a decision is given. (Morrison was tried and sentenced to death for the murder of one Beron. He alleged at the trial that the police had employed methods, including the making of intentional misstatements to trap him, and an enquiry was ordered into their conduct.)
During Saturday's flood in Queensland the waters at Cairns covered a large part of the township. Boats were plying in the street. The esplanade was badly' damaged. In the Kanerungera district houses were swept; away, and at Kuranda twenty-five inches of rain fell in twenty-four hours, ending on Saturday. The railway traffic is suspended throughout the flooded district. Rain has now ceased, and the outlook is now brighter.
Lord Cheimsrord presided over a large gathering of the' Sydney Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches, who carried a resolution affirming the principle of union. Lord Chelmsford deplored the alienation which. a*t present existed of vast masses of people from the church, and said it was difficult' to find what was the principal reason, and he was not going to suggest one. Other speakers were hopeful of the ultimate union of the churches there represented, stating that the spirit of unionism was growing.
