ENRICO INTERROGATED
AM IMPASSIONED APPEAL
(Received April 4, 9 a.m.)
ROME, April 3,
Ths trial of Caintr.orist's at Yiterbo for the miucl-r of a man named Cuocolo and his wife in proceeding. After the informer (Abbattemaggio) had been under examination for a week, Enrico, one of the Cammorist leaders, was interrogated. He revealed a subtle intellect and displayed real rhetoric. In a passionate appeal to the jury, he asked them to consider that the. prisoners were sons of Vesuvius— quick-tempered and vivacious, but incapable of committing ferocious murders. Moreover, he declared, their financial position made risks unnecessary; they had made large profits from selling mules to England during the time of the South African war; also to Lord Kitchener for the use of the troops in England. Enrico explained that he fled to America when Abbattemaggio made his revelations because he feared he might be imprisoned for years before being put. on his trial.
