Mr Walter Scott, a telegraphist at the Napier: Post Office, who is wellknown in Masterton, died, on Wednesday evening.

His Honor the Chief Justice returned to Wellington from Masterton yesterday afternoon.

Lieut.-Colonel A. H. Russell has l>een appointed to command the Mounted Brigade of the Wellington District under the new Defence Act. The appointment is for J our years from March 17. 1911.

Mr D. G. McKibbin. Mayor of Woodville. was farowolled at a banquet these on Wednesday night- prior to his do-oarl-ure for Wellington. The gathering was very representative, and an expression of regret: was freely expressed at tho departure of so-'worthy a citizen.

News was received in Napier by cable message on Thvredny of the death at Bognor, Susex, England, of James Archer, father of Mr James Archer, the new Town Cleric and Engineer of the Borough of Masterton. at Hie,age of 87. The,deceased gentleman Bad been land agent for the late Field Marshal Viscount' Combermere. his son (Lord Cornbermere; a'id Sir Taitr.n Sykes. Mr Archer was also agent for 18 years on the Rokeby estate, made famous in tho writing of Sir Walter Scott.

Thf> Rev. T>. J. Murray, of Dunedin, pud formerly of Masterton. left on Thursday on a trip to the Old Country, via Canada.

A very pleasant gathering was held i'i tho Dominion Hall. Masterton, last evening, the occasion being a farewell social to Constable Dunn, of the local police force. A large number of Constable Dunn's friends were present. The chair was occurred, by Mr C. \ Pownall. who in making a presentation of a ca.sn nf pines and silver match box. on behalf of those present, stated that th-> police force of New Zealand was :> credit to tho Dominion, particularly the police of Masterton. Constable' Dunn' himself, in the course of his sen-ices here, had distinguished him<"lf of his fnir.v-ss and irnpartia'itv nn everyoccasion. Tlie speaker hoped that in his new sphere he would secure further dr,:.*ncMon end evi>ry pit snerity. Constable Dunn was to be comrratnlatod on tlie fact that on his leaving town his services while here Wid -earned the hesr-tv anpreHation of the community.
