The capital at Albany, Xew York State, has been partly destroyed by fare. The damage is estimated at two million pounds, and priceless documents have been lost. The night watchman is missing.
It has been ascertained that the doors to tho elevators and stairway were locked at the start of the fire in the shirt factory at New York, and that this was responsible for the fearful loss of life than ensued.
A cable has been received from the President of the American Tennis Association, confirming the challenge for tho Davis Cup, and stating that the chances of sending a representative team are much brighter than last year. There is no news yet regarding the playing off of the preliminary ties between America and South Africa.
Mr Russell French, the General Manager of tine Bank of Xew South Wales, in his Presidental address to the Bankers' Institute at Sydney, said that at no period in Australian history had tlie money market been steadier than during the past fifteen years. As a result of closer settlement the Banks advances had increased, but the people amongst whom they were spread had increased as a much greater ration. He anticipated no difficulty in connection with the Federal note issue.
