CANADA AND U.S.A.
THE CdY OF ANNEXATION.
A SCANDAL AND A SHAME.
(Received This Morning, 12.10 o'clock.)
OTTAWA, March 28.
The Hon. W..S. Fielding, Minister of Finance, while defending the reciprocity proposals at Montreal, challenged his opponents to prove the assertion that he ever favoured annexation. The allegation was a fabrication. The annexation cry was a scandal and a shame, and he hoped the Prince : of Wales, when he visited them in the future, would be able to testify to this fact. Despite closer trade with the United States, there was no more loyal Dominion than Canada.. „ \ Mr Fielding added thafj Sir Wilfrid Laurier and the Government intended to guard manufacturers fully. • The jatter weresureto benefit through the increased prosperity of the agricultural classes.
