THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.
AN INTERESTING SITUATION.
Mr G.;, Robertson, V of Palmerston. North, general secretary of the Wellington Butter, Creamery and Cheese Factory vEmployees'Union, and secretary of the Taranaki Dairy Workers' Union, supplies correspondence which reveals an interesting situation in the dairying'industry in Tarariaki. At present the industry is working under an award based on the former Wellington award, superseded .by that at present existing in the "Wellington district. This expires in October next. The men. are not satisfied with it, as they claim that trader it they:are receiving less than they were three years '.".g0.-. Mr Robertson wrote to the secretary of the Taranaki Dairying and Farming Industrial Union of Employers, suggesting, that a conference of five asido should meet to draw up a' new award, to come into force at the beginning of next season, as it would be undesirable to have a dispute in the middle of the butter season. ~., .. , In reply to the enquiry as to'-wether the Workers' Union was registered; Mr Robertson wrote that his'union-had no intention of registering under the Arbitration Act, as it had nothing to gain by registration. The secretary of the Employers' Union.-replied that his executive had u nanimpusly decided' that before a conference wn,s held the Workers' Union must register. Mr Robertson is submitting the position to his union. and thus the matter stands at present.
