DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents.)
KAIPARORO.
Dense smoke from bush fires has enveloped the district for several days during the week, and this, in conjunction with excessively warm weather, has rendered the atmosphere very unpleasant. One of the oldest residents here, Mr Fauvel, is about to leave for fresh fields, he having sold his property to Mr Adams, a recent arrival from England. At last steps arc being taken to have the. Makakahi foot-bridge repaired. A shilling subscription list is being taken round, and needless to say all those who habitually use the bridge are quite willing to append their names to the list. Owing to the decrease in the supply of milk to the cheese factory, the manager has dispensed with the services of the second assistant.
Mr J. Harvey has some apples ; n his orchard which are a credit to his skill as a fruit-grower. They are perfectly free from blight of any kind, and several of them turn the scale at a pound. A rather exciting adventure befel "two -small sons of a settler on the West Road last week. They were driving some calves to a section near the Forest Reserve, when they were alarmed by a stag, which showed evident intentions of attacking them. The youngsters quickly climbed a tree, and the stag took up a position at the foot of fie tree, where it remained until some hours' later, when two stockmen who were passing set" their dogs on It, and \ after some difficulty succeeded in ] driving it into the bush. The ani- | mal had evidently .been shot, at, an j its hind leg was broken, and the pain resulting ifrom this had probably infuriated it. '
TAUERU.
The Taiieru, in common with other parts of the Wairarapa, has been enjoying a spell, of, beautiful , weather. ,
The appointment is announced of '■l Miss? Hogg.rco, the, pjositioa: of.Unf.ant ,mistress \ Hi'"' the local school,' where she has been temporarily acting for some time. '
On Friday evening Mr Bedford, for the No-license Party, addressed a meeting on the evils of intemperance, the chair being occupied by Mr G. Garratt., He . handled his subject skilfully, and satisfactorily answered several questions. ' Mr Bridges also briefly addressed! the meeting, ■chiefly with a view to securing financial help. Slips, were handed round for those to sign who wished to contribute to the cost of the campaign. Mr Bedford displayed the wall charts-, lent for the occasion by the schoolmaster, which have recently been issued by the Education Department, and based much of his lecture on information supplied by those charts. After the customary vote of thanks had been passed, the meeting dispersed.
