PROPOSED STREET CONNECTION.
DISCUSSED BY CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE
It was mentioned at ilie meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday that the Borough Council had decided to. take a poll on the proposal to raise a"loan of £5500 for the connecting of Queen Street with Chapel Street by a new road. Mr Chennells remarked upon the importance of the project to the whole of the community. The loan would only represent about. 10Jd on. _ every £IOO of unimproved value land in the Borough. The proposal was one of a progressive character, and if the street were put through it would affect the insurance on adjacent property. He urged upon the Chamber the importance of using foresight in constructing necessary (streets when, the land-was not too dear. Thp ratepayers ,sbotild ,look upon the matter With a liberal view, and as part of a general scheme to beautify the town. Mr Ewington expressed the-opinion that a mistake was being made in taking a poll over the whole borough. There was not a member of'the Council who had the slightest hope of the proposal being carried. He favoured the loan being raised "over a special area, as the Chamber had at first proposed. Mr Chennells thought ,r;:at the Council should give the n l 'payers some lead in,this 1 matter by stating, that they were in favour of the project. The chairman stated that there could not be two opinions concerning .. the necessity of the street. The time was opportune to take a poll, and he, was hooe.ful that it would,be carried. Mr ChennejUsipQmted out that the Borough was being given an opportunity of acquiring the street now, at a price which would not occur again. ~ After some little further discussion, the matter was allowed to drop.
