LIFE SAVING.

EXAMINATIONS IN MASTERTON

A squad of swimmers belonging to, Mr A,. Snowball's life-saving class were put through various examinations by Mr I. A. Somerville in the Christina and Alice Memorial baths yesterday afternoon. 1 here ..were sixteen altogether, including eleven girls and women. Out of these seven qualified for the Royal Life-Saving Society's Medallion, and 4 for the proficiency certificate. The successful candidates were, for the medallion: Evelyn'M. Waddington, Annie Agnes O'Leary, George H. Holder, William O'Brien, James Tait, Harold J. Pryor, and Edward Perry; proficiency: Alma-Perry, Esmee Ellen Petherick, Johan Nellie O'Dowd, and Eiola Gwendoline Andrews ; elementary: Mary Katherine Olsen, Gwendoline Esmee Dixon, Christina Peters, Florence May Kerr, and' Martha Prentice Peters. There; will be" a further examination " this morning, when Messrs A. Snowball and G. H. Holder, and i Miss A. O'Leary will attempt to pass the Award of Merit, which is a very severe test of endurance and skill in' 1 ' the water. Several small girls will also, be examined in the easier sections. The judge was very much impressed by the work of the competitors, which compared favourably with the recent Wellington candidates, particularly that of the girls, Misses O'Leary and Waddington deserving special mention. Miss O'Leary's performance was very fine, and Miss Waddington's was not far behind, except for a plight weakness in the kick in the back stroke.
