CARTERTON.

Mr A. R. Wallis was the successful tenderer for the erection of a Catholic Presbytery in Carterton. The building is to be erected on the south side of the church. The contractors made a start yesterday. Mr H. Martin was called to Gisborne nt the latter end of the past week, hav. ing received thte sad intelligence of the death of his sister. The deceased i lady had been ailing for some'time, I so the end was not auite unexpected. J A conference of Rechabites takes \ place at Masterton this evening, when delegates from Carterton will be present, to arrange details for the welcome of Bro. Phillipson, H.C.R;, who arrives at the Bluff on April 3rd, and visits Masterton on the 10th. ; Mr R. Smith, who was the delegate from the local Fire Brigade to the United Fire Brigades' Conference at Hokitika, returned home on Saturday night, having returned home via the Otira Gorge. /The Brigade team returned home on Monday evening. At a meeting of the local branch of the Wairarapa Egg Circle one new member was enrolled. The membership is gradually increasing, for tho benefits are becoming more apparent , as'the Circle gets older. ' • v ' Mr H. D. Bedford, who is lecturing in tho Wairarapa electorate under the auspices of the No-License League, addressed splendid congregations at Carterton on Saturday and Sunday evenings. During the week he visits the outlying settlements, Mr D. T. King, building contractor, is making splendid progress with-the erection of the Methodist parsonage at the southern end of the town. . The annual report of the South Wairarapa Poultry Association to be presented at a meeting on Friday, reads: —In submitting for your adopj tion the annual report and balancesheet, the society is to be congratulated upon having had a successful year. The membership of the Association has kept up to the mark, the few resignations received having been more than balanced by new members. Our annual show in July last was a great success, the entries establishing a record, and the executive have received letters of appreciation for the care and attention bestowed upon thie exhibits. The thanks of the -Association are due to' the townspeople, and all others who have assisted the Association during the year, and especially to the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Association for the generous use,of, their spacious hall.. As you 'are aware no were allotted to this association jkist year, the whole being competed for at Hastings. For our show in Jjriy noxt wo have been allotted the <ehanipionships in Indian Runners jand Pekin ducks, which should create some competition.
