A CARTERTON CASE,
ACCUSED FINED £5.
At the Magistrate's Court, Carterton, yesterday, before Mr L. G Reid, S.M., John Collins, was charged.with having, given an order for" liquor intended to be taken into the No-License district of Masterton* and that he failed to notify the vendor that such liquor was to be so taken. • . v
There was no appearance of accused, aiid-tlw case for the prosecution was proceeded with. Richard Harkness, clerk in the employ of Barraud and Abraham, Palmerston North, stated thai a man giving the name of J. Collins came to him on February 24th and ordered a case of five dozen of ale. He said the liquor was not going into a No-License a-rea. .'.'■•• '

Wright,' station-master, Cartertori, gave evidence as to two' cases of beer coming through as excess • from Palmerston,' in the name of Collins. Constable Carmody, stationed at Carterton, stated that on February 25fch last, in response to a telegram ■ from Sergeant Miller he went to Carterton station. "He'saw. defendant claiming two cases of beer from Palmerston North. Witness, asked accuseds the beer belonged to him, and he said "yes." Accused said he was going to Masierton to'a relative, a Mrs Neilson, and intended to take . one dozen .bottles with him, and the remainder -he-, was: going- to leave, with Mr Halley, with whom he had made arrangements to send on the four dozen as required. Accused also said, "In fact, the beer belongs to Mr Halley.'? Accused, when brought to Mr Halley,, said he/ was not the; man with whom ,he had made the; arrangement.. .Witness then read a written statement from accused, which he had refused to sign. The statement bore. out what ho had previously stated. His Worship-said he bad no doubt the liquor was intended to be taken into the Masterton district, and accordingly fined defendant £5, in default one month's imprisonment.
