A PECULIAR SYSTEM.

The system which is at. present being adopted on the railways. of the North Island of New Zealand for checking the tickets of passengers has not much to recommend it. A traveller by a train to Mastertoii yesterday was astonished to see a hatless young man, in civilian's clothes, hurriedly enter a carriage and exclaim, "Tickets, please!" Enquiry showed l that the young fellow was a railway station clerk, who was anxious to discover , if, the guard had beeii doing his duty. Tito system opens the door to abuse, for any person might v enter a carriage, collect the. passengers' tickets, and decamp. ( If it is necessary to test the honesty of guards, it is surely reasonable to expect that the official despatched to perform this onerous duty should be possessed - of -somo badge, uniform, or authority whicli would distinguish him from the" Ordinary traveller.
