CARTERTON.

An unpleasant accident, and one which may easily have been attended with serious consequences, happened to Mr Albert Hooker; of Carrington, on Monday. He borrowed a friend's bicycle to go on a message, and not observing that it was a free-wheel, mounted and commenced to ride down the, steep slope in the vicinity of the dairy factory there. He very soon realised that the machine was a freewheel, and as.time grew on the speed became. more furious, and matters were looking somewhat serious. Mr Hooker was watching for an opportunity to dismount, and while his titarughts were centred on this matter, the bicycle wheels came in contact with a rut, and before the rider had time to recognise the danger, he was thrown heavily to the ground. Mr. Hooker came down with some force, receiving a nasty knock on the right side of his head, and injuring his right shoulder. The force of the impact dazed Mr Hooker, but fortunately no bones were broken. In the course of a day or two he should be convalescent. ' A' pleasant surprise was the lot of Mrs J. H. Wakelin, of Carterton, on i Saturday, when the young ladies ,pf the Bible Class at St. Mark's Sunday' School waited on her at the residence, and asked Mrs Wakelin's acceptance of a handsome electrp-.plated and glass biscuit barrel. Mrs ."Wakelin resigned the position of superintendent of St. Mark's. Sunday School a few weeks back, and this presentation was to show Mrs WaJcelin the esteem and appreciation towards her for her untiring effprts on behalf of the pupils during tl>e time she was teaching the Bible Class. The -gift was feelingly acknowledged. _ „.'..'..'

The Wairarapa Egg Circle been, advised that last week's consignment Realised Is 8d per dozen —a very satisfactory return. It is rumoured in Carterton that the Bishopric of the Wellington Diocese, rendered vacant by Bishop Wallis' resignation, is to lie offered to Archdeacon Harper, of Wellington, and formerly of Palmerston North. The Synod meets on Wednesday, so something definite in regard to the subject should be known soon after. The Archdeacon is very well known throughout the .Diocese, and those who have had acquaintance with his .work consider that his appointment to the position could not be/bettered. The Carrington Co-operative Dairy Company is.at present dealing with about 600 gallons of milk daily. Archdeacon Fancourt has been on a visit to St. Mark's Parish < during the past few days. On Sunday he'assisted the Rev. R. Young (vicar) with the services. The offertories were for the Melancsian Mission, and the sermons, morning and evening, were appropriate to the occasion.
