MASTERTON WINS THE FIRST EVENT.

HOKITIKA, Last Night. The annual Eire Brigades Competitions were commenced here yesterday, -'when splendid weather prevailed. 'Of the eleven competitions to be held, two wore got off, viz., - the two men coupling (dry), and the ojve man manual events. The high-pressure Borough water supply was very favourably commented upon by the competitors, whose general verdict was that it was admirably suited for the competition work... Sixty teams competed in the 'coupling 'event. Results:— TWO MEN COUPLING. Master ton, 88 sees 1 Dunedin South (inclusive penalty 2secs.), 39 2-ssecs. ' * Hokitika (lsec. penalty), 39 2-osec * *Dead heat. The tie is to be run off on Monday. Hamilton was fourth, their time being -iOsecs. (including 3sees. penalty); Hastings iifth, 40 3-ssecs (including 3secs. penalty); Hillside Railway sixth, 41 4-ssecs (.including 2secs. penalty); Timaru 42 1-5 sec. tied for seventh place with Auckland Railway (lsec. penalty). Other competitors were:— Carter-' ton, r 43secs, ■;. Napier, - 43 2-ssecs; Wanganui," 43 3-osocs;' v'atea, 43 4-5 sees; Dunedin South, 44 sees; Dannevirke, 45secs; - Newmarket, 46 3-osgcs. The standardi was reduced, from 'time to time to as low as 42 sees, and a number of the teams were "blown out," consequently their times were not' l'ecorded. ONE MAN MAN UAL EVEfc . . The standard was reduced from time to time. The following teams were "blown out":— Te Kiiiti, Kaiapoi, lnvercargill, Kumara, Waverley, Dannevirke. The Hastings Police, Wanganui, and Spit teams were disqualified. The following are the first, .six teams out of the twenty-live who have so far competed in the reel and ladder (wet) events:— Timaru, 59 3-sseos; lnvercargill, 61 4-sse>cs; Wanganui, 63 2-ssecs (4secs penalty) ; Dunedin City, 66 2-ssecs; Naselby, 67 4-ssecs; Rosiyn, 68 2-5 sees. (lsec. penalty). Caversham, boratford, Reef ton, Napier and Hokitika teams were disqualified. The last mentioned have entered a protest.
