SYDNEY, Varolii The Fifth Test match between the South Africans and Australia commenced to-day in fair weather. The wicket was slightly soft, but rolled out well. Slier well won the toss and sent Australia in to bat. At the drawing of stumps Australia had lost three wickets for 281 runs. Macartney reached his third century in succession amid prolonged cheers. A representative cricket match between Hawke's Bay and Auckland was commenced to-day ,at ■ Victoria Park.- Auckland won the toss and elected to bat, with.the result that at the end of the first day's play they have four wickets down for 334 runs.
