PHYSICAL TRAINING IN • SCHOOLS.
ABOLITION OF APPARATUS RE- ' COMMENDED. [By Telegraph — Prcsx Association.'] WELLINGTON, Last JS T ight. j This afternoon a letter from Major McDonald,- Cotpmandnnt of Oadets, was read at the meeting of- She Education Board, initimatmg that ar- , rangements would be made, for Staff - Sergeant'.'.'lnstructors, to instruct teachers- in physical drill without cost to the Boardi, provided that the Board would assemble the teachers i at suitable centres. j He also suggested' the desirability of limiting the physical training in schools to free exeroises without apparatus. TTiis had already been decided with regard to the cadets. It was now universally recognised that j the use of apparatus, tended to stiffen limbs, besides which the apparatus was costly. It was also intimated that all !the Board's male teachers who cared to attend the annual camp or school for junior cadet officers would ibe' provisioned free of cost. "These excellent suggestions," the Inspector wrote, "are heartily approved by us." / After some discussion on a motion to co-operate on the suggestions, an. amendment shelving the matter till next meeting was carried. It was remarked by some members,' that if the new theory was correct, a-great - ' 1 deal of time and energy had been wasted in the past on the exercises, with apparatus.
