NEW CALEDONIA.
INVADED BY JAPANESE MINERS.
(Received February 28, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 28. Mr Watriama, a coloured resident of Sydney,, who claims to be King of the Loyalty Islands, states that he has" received a despatch to the effect that Japanese spies are infesting New Caledonia on the. pretence of being miners. They work the. mines for a time, and ithen go throughout the country, surveying, and noting the lay of the land. He lias written to the French Consul protesting against the presence of the large numbers of Japanese, as he is persuaded they are a menace, and strongly urges the French. Govern.-, ment to command the Nisol Company to deport these undesirable people. The Consul, he asserts, has' acknowledged the receipt of the letter. Mr Watriama has also communicated with Sir Edward Grey, British Secretary for Foreign Affairs, with reference to Great Britain coming to an understanding with France regarding the taking over the protectorate of the islands.
