MASTERTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ENTRIES FOR AUTUMN SHOW
A -total of 600 entries have been recorded for the aiitumn show of the Masterton Horticultural Soc- , iety which opens to-morrow. This I is a record for . the district. The j Society had intended utilising the | Drill Hall only, but with such ' a . great support it is ■ anticipated it | will be necessary to take the Town Hall. The decorated tables this year number fourteen, and are "to be ijudged by the Society's judge as well as .'by popular ballot. Many, new exhibitors have mad© enltries, showing that the influence of the Society is spreading. A glance through -the entries shows the oi l weakness— : pot plants. - if we cairinot get pot plants we ca!n r arid do pipcirfe i ciass lor six ' roses there 1 are t:x j entries, in i&ang^ds! 14,' dahlias 6,' verbenas 9, asters 7, collection of cut flowers 11. On the whole, the cut flowers average easily six entries, which will afford a great wealth of bloom. Decorative classis,es are well tilled, and every prize yill be well earned. The very torward season has interfered seriously, with the, fruit entries. The only classes with decentty strong competition are apples and pears, averaging more than six entries to a class. Tomatoes, as ixsual, . aie strong and will command keen competition. vegetans attract/splendid entries, giving an average of quite eigiht. The .biggest class is carrots, with 10 entries, vegetable marrows 9, onions 11. Home industries are very much stronger than usual, quite upsetting tlie iSociety's. partly formed resolution to cut the class out for next year. White scones are responsible for no fewer than 10 entries, tomato sponge sandwich 14, seed cake 8, and. so on right ifhrough the class. Fancy work is> irather disappointing. The largest entry is three, and' several classes are blank. With such a formidable list of entries the Committee and judges will have all they can do to accommodate ai.d satisfy competitors. AH entries must be in place- by ten o'clock, and exhibitors of poit! plants are requested to stage their plants' this evening.
