MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce-was held yesterday afternoon. There were present:—Messrs F. W. Carey (presiding), G-. . C. Summerell, V. .Donald and W. E. Chamberlain. ' The Treasurer reported a credit balance of/£l6 5s Id. A letter was read (from the family of the late, Mr S. Carroll, thanking the Chamber for its expression ol sympathy.—Received.' The Crfstlepoint County Council wrote, expressing regret thai, the chairman had been unable to attend the conference in regard to railway matters, as the. invitation had not reached him in time.— Received.

PROPOSED STOCK; BRIDC4E.

Mr A. P. Rawson- wrote stating that he had had- a conversation with Mr Wolfe, the contratcor for the construction of the two bridges at, Mie Northern, Approach, in. regard:

"to the disposal of the timber of the old bridges. Much of the timber, the .writer understood, was perfectly sound, and was to be used in the construction of a- stock bridge at the end of Cohraiba Road. If so it seemed l a waste of labour and time to cart it first to the County Council yard and subsequently back again to the site of the bridge, while the contractor was 1 , liiftder no. obligation to v exercise handling tlie.timber. He suggested that; the! timber be carted direct to the site of the proposed bridge as a saving of about £IOO would thus be effected. ; 'Mi' Caselberg moved that, the letter be forwarded to ; the County Council for their favourable consideration.- '' ',- ,■'•'';': ' ''• V Mr Mbodie'stated that a newstock bridge would have the effect of saving the Northern approach : roads .in winter. -.The motion, was seconded by Mr Donald and carried.

QUARTERLY MEETING,

The quarterly meeting of the members of the Chamber was held subset quently, at which there were present : Messrs F. W. Carey (presiding), G. C. Summerell, V. Donald, M. Caselberg, W. E. Mr Carey reported that the recent deputation had waited on the Minister for Railways in due course, j*"aiid that the latter had promised to j reply within a week or ten days. ■ No reply had yet been received, but jMr Buchanan had informed the i speaker that the time-table would be submitted to the Chamber before being put into force. A quantiy of other business (reported elsewhere) was transacted.
