THE COOPER REQUISITION.
If the "prominent /Government sup-* porters" who presented a requisition to Mr J. C. Cooper last week maybe taken as authorised representatives of,the Liberal Party, the cause of .'the-latter must be in a condition. There .are two or three very significant points about this'pre. cious requisition. The first is that the Government finds it necessary to go, to (the.. Opposition ranks' for ia suitable candidate, ..The -second is : that a party which has. studiously refrained from-opening up land in the Wairarapa for closer settlement should. have 'the effrontery to claim, by inference, that it is necessary to return an accredited Government; representative before land will be thrown open for -settlement. ' The third is that, if the district is to ad-; vance, it must return a "live Government' member." Only one conclusion is to be drawn from the latter suggestion, and that is that the revenues of the country may be shamelessly employed for the purchase of political support. If the future of this resourceful .district depends Upon the humiliation of its people, the sooner it goes to perdition the better. Fortunately, however, the electors refuse to believe that with all its administrative sins the- Government is so steeped' in iniquity that it would resort, to acts of wanton corruption.
