AFRAID OF IT.
It has now been demonstrated beyond ishadow of doubt that Sir Joseph Ward has neither the courage < nor ithe ability to deal in a•'• comprehensive, statesmanlike manner, with th;j land question of the Dominion. Speaking at Ashburton on Thursday night, he is reported to have .said that "the present House could, not hope to reach a decision on (the ques" | tion of. tenure." Why can it not .reach a..decision? There is a clear; i majority, of members.in ..the Hoxise I who have been returned pledged to I support' the freehold option. Sir I Joseph knows this. He knows that if he were to frame > progressive policy it would pass through the House with flying colours. But no; he flouts the House, and inferenti'ally flouts the electors, because he is afraid that it might cost him the support of a few leaseholders. Is this statesmanship? Is it what one. 1 would expect from a man who places the interests of the Dominion; before: I those of office and .self?
