Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1911. A RAILWAY LEAGUE.
Immediately after the recent deputation visited Wellington on railway matters, the Age urged the-import-ance ~of: forming an East Coast Railway League, with the object of bringing pressure upon the Government to. do justice to that vast area of country extending between Gisborne and Wellington. The claims of this . district have never yet been fully recognised. The time*is coming when there will be a main trunk railway extending right along the East .Coast, from Wellington, to Auckland. It is to hasten that time that the assistance of a, League is required. The immense importance of the undertaking must be impressed upon members of Parliament as well as Ministers of the Crown. One of the first works which must be undertaken is the. deviation of the Rimu-taka-.railway. . Thisi is essential to any further development of traffic between the East Coast and Wellington. It is certain that the Woodville Gorge;and line cannot be utilised to. cope with the increasing East Coast : traffic 'for a much longer period. Then there is the question of that important connection between Masterton and Waipukurau, which would mean ah enoiv mous accretion in traffic. This cannot be much longer delayed.;- Its ur-. gency. has already been pressed' home upon Ministers, and further procrastination is impossible. With this
work iu contemplation, and the pushing forward of connection further north, the Bimutaka deviation becomes imperative. The formation of a Railway League would mean that no departure from a given course would be permitted.
