CLERK AND ENGINEER.
The suggestion has been made that, with a view to economy, the office, of Engineer to the Borough of Masterton should not be filled. The Mayor rightly characterises this suggestion as absurd. With so much money invested in drainage and water-works, to say nothing of the roads, and with so many important undertakings awaiting fulfilment, it would be little short of madness to attempt to do without the services of a permanent engineer. Masterton is too important a township, and has too much money expended upon it, to permit of its being handed over at this stage to the 'tender mercies of laymen. The Council .should at once dismiss from its thoughts any proposal which would be fraught with so much danger as that to do without the services of a permanent engineer.
