The statement conveyed by the Canadian Minister of Finance, to Lord Strathcona, which appears in this morning's cables, will go some distance towards relieving the apprehensions which have been formed by English statesmen concerning the effects of the * reciprocal agreement with the United States. It will not, however, satisfy the public conscience that there is not a deeper sentiment than commerce underlying the reciprocity movement. All the evidence points to a mutual attempt to Americanise the .Northern territory, and it will require all the diplomacy of Britain's most sagacious statesmen to avoid a national calamity;
