LAND SETTLEMENT.
The Wellington Land Board has, in the opinion of the Rangitikei Advocate, furnished a striking commentary on tlie Premier's recent assertion that his Ministry, have promoted land settlement. Shortly stated, the members who visited certain blocks in the* district .were compelled to admit that the land the settlers had been induced to take up had been : so- over-valued' that unless they can command capital they must go under. That must be the fate of these, tenants of the State landlord. If they held the freehold they might be able to borrow and improve, but it is also reported the Advances to 'Settlers'' Department, the beneficial influence of which, has been so loudly vaunted by the politicians, will not lend them sufficient money. It looks suspiciously like men ! being induced to go on the land by false pretences,; and it is obvious that this cannot be called land settlement. As a matter of fact the land laws are- in favour of land speculation, and against •the interests of ..men who want to use the land. ",' . '
