Sir Joseph Ward was to have spoken at Ohakime last night. Ho returns to Wellington to-day. The death is announced of Mr W. A. Balfour, a very old resident of Waverley. Mr A. Dunstall, of Newman,' intends visiting the Old Country after an abr sence of forty-one years.- < The Rev. Father Harnett has been appointed to assist the, Very Rev. Dean McKonna at Masterton. Mr W. H. S. Nicholls. formerly postmaster at Mastertoi}, who has recently retired from the postal service, intends settling down in Wanganui, where lie spent his boyhood. i Mr W. Murdoch, of Shannon, and one time of Kketahuna, has intimated his intention "of contesting the Otaki \\seat in the Labour interest at the next general election. The Rev. A. Hodge and Mrs Hodge 'left Masterton for Dunedin yesterday afternoon. The, Rev. Mr Hodge is attending the annual meeting of the Congregational Union. Messrs W. M. Easthope and D. Threadwell left Masterton. yesterday for Napier, to attend the annual District Meetings of the Independent Order of Rechabites.. Mr Lomas, the present Chief Clerk, lias been appointed to sueceed Mr Edward Tregear as secretary for the Labour Department. Mr N. Rowley becomes Chief Clerk. '' Mr W. A. Yeitch, r president-~of-the Amalgamated j Socjety..of,.Railway Servants, has been transferred oh promotion from Wanganui to Cross Creek. . :; Mr J. A. Matheson, touring,maii- : ager Jot Messrs Fuller and Sons and the Taylor-Carrington management, is in. Masterton, arranging for the forthcoming picture-drama season'. A Timaru telegram states that Archdeacon Harper, Ticar of Timaru,. who,is at present in England, and is in his 78th year, has written 'the'Ves-', try resigning his position as from December 31st. He will return to the '■■ Dominion a bout May. The Vestry has held over consideration of the,resignation until the Archdeacon's return. '
