PRUSSIA AND THE VATICAN.
LETTER FROM THE POPE
(Received Last Night, 11.45 o'clock.)
BERLIN, January 30
Prussia recently required the exemption of professors of Catholic theology in Prussian Universities from the anti-modernist oath arguing that they were Prussian officials, and the oath would deprive them of tlieir independence as' teachers. 1
It was officially understood that the Vatican yielded, but the Pope's letter to the Archbishop of Cologne, now published, expresses the convection ■ that while professors who were not holding church boneficies were exempted, they should,, rather than bow before men inspired Avith hate against the Catholic faith, be the first to take the oath in order to slioav their independence. The letter caused a great outburst in the press. Even the Krouz Zeitung accuses the Pope of intentionally provoking a conflict \vlth the Prussian Government.
