MIDSUMMER.

Most people regard the end of December as the middle of "summer, Astronomically this is correct, but from a meteorological point of view the Rev. D. 0. Bates-states that it is wrong. The sun reaches its southernmost declination and near-' est approach to the earth about December 22nd; but as the heat of the earth, and atmosphere goes on accumulating, the height-of summer comes later, and summer is roughly taken, as only commencing witfi December as its first month.
