OUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
(To the Editor.) . , | casually reading your.local :■_:'■■ columns of Saturday's issue, one ■ thing struck mo as l)eing soraewKat misleading to public opinion, i.e.,' what was said at. the Chamber-of Commerce ;by twoof its members; If your : ■■;: reporter is.correct in,his notes,.! feel ' much grieved?at the "Statements of Messrs Daniell and Chennclls. > More especially the latter, when he'stated .-, that "it had been mentioned at a .• previous meeting that most; of the om- =/'''■" ployees at the freezing : wbrks were going to Carterton to live.. He had made inquiries, and found that this. • was quite-contrary to. fact. Nearly the whole of the employees at the works were taking up their; residence in Masterton." Every person, from, •'■the farmer to the shop-assistant, knows full well'*that Masterton property generally has gone down in vak tie to the extent of 25 per cent. Two people who were flourishing in business and erecting dwellings in various parts of the Borough have sacrificed" their properties,"and forwhy? Business is not to be done. .Where do the men go jto with -their cheques—to say nothing , /-..0f the hands att the new freezer, who, I am. sure, are in the majority residing "" in Carterton. Prohibition, to my: mind, is the true cause of'mostof the depression now existant,'and if a vote were taken on the- matter with your readers, you would'..be convinced with my way of thinking. Hoping Mr Ciienne'lls will make fnfther inquiries before he- "throws off" such remarks again, I am, etc., ' PROPERTY OWNER,.
