A SLANDER CASE.
LADY AND FATHER-IN-LAW. (Received January 17, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 16, Mrs Horace West has brought an action for slander against her father-in-law, Sir Algernon West, P.C., a director of the Union Bank of London, and a well-known city man. Mrs West says that the alleged slander caused her to be excluded from Court functions. DETAILS OF THE CASE. WHAT CAUSED THE SEPARATION. (Received Last Night, 10.25 o'clock.) LONDON, January 17. The action for slander brought by Mrs Horace West against Sir Algernon West is being heard before Mr J Justice Darling, in the King's Bench Division. Mr Duke, plaintiff's counsel, stated that her marriage had been happy for some years. Then owing to her ; husband's misconduct, her health suffered, and a deed of separation was j agreed to in 1908. Sir Algernon West \ had slanderously informed Viscount Althorpe (then, Lord ; Chamberlain), Mrs Asquith, and others, that plaintiff was "responsible for ow;ing to her-hopeless extravagance. The Court upheld Viscount Al(thorpe's refusal, in the public interest, to disclose whether Sir Algernon West had made this statement to him. The hearing of the case was adjourned.
