GAS AND ELECTRICITY.

In a recent issue of the Weekly Scotsman, mention is made of the fact that a great improvement' had been effected in the lighting of the thoroughfai-es in the vicinity of the British Houses of Parliament in London. High pressure gas, which is a brilliant illuminant with improved burners and incandescent mantles, has superseded electric and ordinary gas lighting. The high pressure gas is well diffused through specially hardened glass hemispherical globes, and it is claimed to be superior to electrical power in penetrating fogs. All the leading roadways in the city have been supplied with the new illuminant, the contract having been obtained in' competition with electric light companies. The price of gas is found to be from 20 to 50 per cent, cheaper than electricity.
