CANADA FAVOURS NEW ZEALAND. A FIVE YEARS' CONTRACT. 1 (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) I MELBOURNE, January 15. ' The Hon. A. Fisher, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, has received a cable from Canada, expressing regret that the Commonwealth declines to permit New Zealand to be a port of call. The Government of Canada, therefore, has decided to enter into a contract with Sir James Mills, manager of the Union Steamship Company, for five years, for a service between Canada and New Zealand. , ,Mr. Fish,er says:. . "They put the' matter; in an- aggressive way;-said-we could not agree to the pro'-k< posal, because it would mean subsidis- \ ing another country."
