Counsel quoted a letter from the Chief Engineer to tTie owners, stating that Captain Ilbery had askec! him to take sufficient coal to drive the vessel-
Mr Shanks declared that neither the owners, the builders nor liimself had suggested utilising space on "the spare deck for coal. Counsel produced a plah. showing the space marked as coal bunkensi. Witness replied thai; he never regarded it as permanent bunkers. It might have been some assistance in coaling to place a small quantity on the spare decks. , H-e had not heard anything about the vessel's instability-
Asked as to wliy the. coal was not placed on the spare deck at Glasgow, Mr Shanks said it was not considered safe. It was quite certain that the decks did not leak badly.
